Signs of a Leaking Skylight
Skylights can lend a contemporary aesthetic to your home. Not only are they beautiful and let in lots of natural light, but if they are strategically placed, they can improve energy efficiency, and vented skylights can improve air circulation and IAQ. The main drawback is that they can leak, which can damage your roof, ceilings, and walls. To prevent a leaking skylight, it’s important to note the early warning signs and intervene before the damage gets worse. Once you determine what’s going on, you’ll need to decide whether to fix the leaking skylight or replace it.
Signs of a Leaking Skylight
The main causes of leaks are from skylight flashing, loose or missing shingles around the skylight, damaged sealing around the skylight, or the age of the skylight. Improper installation can also cause a skylight to leak.
Water Stains
Water drops or discoloration on the ceiling around the skylight can indicate a leak. The stains can resemble rings and slightly fade over time.
Peeling and Bubbling Paint and Wallpaper
If you notice this, it means moisture is trapped between the paint or wallpaper and the wall.
Rotting Wood
This occurs if you have a wooden skylight frame. Moisture will infiltrate the wood, causing it to warp or rot, resulting in a leak between the frame and the skylight.
Electrical Issues
If water is leaking from the skylight, it can damage and corrode wires, leading to possible short circuits. Water can also damage metal components of the electrical system, which can cause shocks.
Mold/Mildew Growth
Dampness and water can cause mold and mildew to grow. This manifests in fuzzy black, green, and gray patches with a distinct moldy/musty odor. The presence of mold or mildew indicates that the water leak has been active for some time.
